This is a special note to provide as much information on the changing situation around the export halt to China as a result of the coronavirus. This is hugely concerning for our district: log exports have ceased, crayfish and fish exports also, and any company exporting any product to China whether horticultural or manufacturing.
This is a major issue for many businesses, contractors and employees. No one knows how long this situation is going to remain. New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) and Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) are assessing the situation daily.
From our conversations, the best advice we have is:
- Plan for the worst, hope for the best.
- Stay close to your bank or finance company. Let them know your honest situation. We understand some finance companies are providing a “grace period” for capital repayments and banks are assessing on a case by case basis.
- Communicate with your staff and contractors about the situation. Being open and honest with staff will help them to plan ahead also.
- Keep up to date with the NZTE web page or MPI.
